A women’s vest is one of those essentials that comes in handy at any time of year. In winter, it works perfectly as an extra layer: it keeps you warmer outdoors, and when you step inside, you can take off your jacket while the vest still provides some warmth if the room is chilly.
Spring brings that familiar dilemma: too warm for a jacket, too cold without one. That’s exactly when a women’s padded vest comes in handy. Pair it with a long-sleeve polo or a warm sweatshirt for just the right amount of warmth without overheating.
In summer, a vest is useful on cool evenings or windy days. And in fall, when you’re not quite ready for a heavy jacket but still want to stay warm, a vest is an ideal choice. Whatever the season, a women’s vest is a true wardrobe must-have.
Vests have been part of traditional Ukrainian clothing since ancient times and are considered one of the oldest elements of Ukrainian folk dress. The earliest versions had straight backs and could be closed with a seam or made of two panels with a side fastening. Each region developed its own distinctive cuts and styles, while the decoration was traditionally crafted with great skill. Different types of vests had their own names, including kirsetka, bruslyny, leibyky, kabali, katanky, and others.
From the mid-19th century, a type of vest known as the kirsetka became widespread. It was fitted through the upper body and widened below the waist, sometimes with distinctive pleats. It was particularly common in central and eastern regions of Ukraine and was worn by both women and men. In the Dnipro region, kirsetkas typically fitted closely around the waist before flaring out below it. By the early 20th century, traditional vests in western Ukraine were increasingly replaced by fitted, richly decorated kirsetkas made in a variety of shapes and materials.
In Zakarpattia, the bunda (kamazolia) — a straight-cut fur vest — remained in use until the early 20th century. Short, waist-length fur vests were decorated with floral ornaments. A simpler form of the traditional vest survived in the keptar, worn by people in the mountainous regions of the Carpathians. Local versions differed in length and decoration. In the Hutsul region, keptars were embellished with embroidery, braiding, leather appliqués, decorative stitching, cords, and copper ornaments.
Staying warm doesn’t necessarily mean wearing lots of layers — and piling on clothes isn’t always comfortable either. A women’s padded vest is a great choice:
